Information on the approval of medical aids
What are medical aids?
According to the definition of the German Social Security Code V, medical aids are objects “that are necessary in individual cases to ensure the success of medical treatment, to prevent an impending disability or to compensate for a disability, unless they are to be regarded as general everyday objects”. (§ 33 SGB V)
How is a product approved as an aid?
The list of medical aids enables both doctors and health insurance companies to see which products are officially approved as medical aids.
The list is divided into 39 product groups, from which the first two digits of the aid number assigned to each product are derived, depending on the aid.
Each product group (e.g. group 15 for incontinence aids) has certain quality standards and requirements that must be met for an aid to be included.
In addition, the manufacturer must provide evidence of functional suitability, safety, indication-related requirements and medical benefit.
The GKV-Spitzenverband decides whether a product is included in the list of medical aids after the Medical Service has carried out a medical-technical examination.
Once a decision has been made and the product is officially considered an assistive product, it is entered in the medical aids register and receives a ten-digit medical aids number, which enables the doctor to prescribe the product to the patient within the scope of the statutory health insurance’s obligation to provide benefits.
How can a medical aid be prescribed?
If the prescribing doctor considers it useful for the patient’s individual therapy to use a specific medical aid, he can indicate the ten-digit item number, the number and a precise description of the aid on a corresponding sample form.
In addition, an indication of the diagnosis and, if applicable, information on the intended purpose, type of manufacture, material and dimensions is required.

ELANEE support belt
In mid-2018, our ELANEE support belt in sizes S, M, L and XL was added to the list of medical aids and can now be prescribed by your doctor.
The ELANEE support belt is an orthopaedic belt consisting of a bandage with an adjustable Velcro fastener, elastic straps and stabilizing back rods for short-term use in the lower back area.
The support is suitable for women during pregnancy to relieve back or pelvic girdle pain and after birth to stabilize the abdominal wall.
The infinitely variable Velcro fastener allows the support to be individually adjusted.
This means that the support belt can be used throughout pregnancy and after the birth.
