There are women who align their lives with their menstrual cycle. This method is called cycle syncing. But what is actually behind this hype?

Thanks to social media, cycle-synced training has spread in recent years, and not just in the sports bubble. If individual reports are to be believed, it improves general well-being. Additionally, cycle syncing is said to alleviate cycle-related symptoms. But is this really the truth, or is it just wishful thinking?

What exactly is cycle syncing?

Cycle syncing is an approach that involves adjusting your lifestyle. Specifically, this method involves adapting your diet and workouts to the various phases of the menstrual cycle. The goal is to reduce negative effects caused by hormonal fluctuations and thereby increase your well-being. Cycle-based training is becoming particularly popular in the world of sports.

To get the very best out of your body, it is recommended to observe your cycle for at least three months. But what exactly should you be looking out for?

  • When does your period start and how long does it last?
  • On which days do you have plenty of strength and energy?
  • When do symptoms such as digestive issues, pain, or mood swings occur?

Through this close observation, you will understand your body better and eventually be able to easily track which phase of your monthly cycle you are in. This allows you to perfectly align your schedule with your natural rhythm and make optimal use of your energy levels.

The phases of the menstrual cycle

The female cycle has an average length of 21 to 35 days. It begins with your period and ends on the day before the next menstruation starts. During this time, your body goes through four different phases, which are also referred to as seasons in the cycle-syncing method.

Menstrual phase - winter

The cycle begins with menstruation. This phase lasts between four and seven days and is often accompanied by symptoms such as abdominal pain, headaches, or back pain. Your hormones are at their lowest level during this time.

Follicular phase - Spring

Immediately after menstruation, the follicular phase begins. It lasts about 14 days. During this time, the hormone FSH causes your egg cells to mature. In this phase, many women feel significantly more energetic. This is because estrogen production is running at full speed.

Ovulation Phase - Summer

Ovulation occurs during this phase, making it the most fertile time for your body. Estrogen levels are at their peak, which can lead to headaches or food cravings.

Luteal phase – Autumn

During this phase, your body goes on a hormonal rollercoaster as estrogen and progesterone levels rise and fall. Many women suffer from premenstrual syndrome during this time. This manifests, among other things, as mood swings, difficulty concentrating, or a lack of motivation.

Where exactly does the cycle-syncing method come into play during the menstrual cycle?

By aligning physical activities with their cycle, women can, among other things, schedule their workouts during phases when their body has the most energy. However, a cycle-oriented lifestyle can provide additional benefits that enhance well-being. For example, an adapted diet also helps to balance hormonal fluctuations, which leads to a better physical condition.

Cycle-syncing nutrition

Menstrual phase:
Foods such as coffee or alcohol can worsen symptoms during this phase. It is therefore advisable to avoid them so as not to take any risks. Since the body also loses a lot of iron during your period, iron-rich foods such as lentils, beans, or spinach are an ideal addition to your diet. Micronutrients such as omega-3 and magnesium should definitely not be missed. If you find it difficult to provide your body with all the important nutrients, you can of course also resort to dietary supplements.

Follicular and ovulatory phases:
These two phases are perfect for lighter fare. The menu should include plenty of fruits and vegetables to provide the body with vitamins and minerals. Lean proteins and whole-grain products complement the selection and provide the necessary fiber.

Luteal phase:
The cycle ends with this phase, which means your energy levels also drop a little. This is due to the ups and downs of your hormones. Here, the body can be supported with the right nutrition to alleviate PMS symptoms. Foods that contain a lot of magnesium, such as bananas or almonds, help to reduce stress and cramps. Whole-grain foods and vegetables will keep you full for a long time. If you do get cravings, dark chocolate will help lift your mood.

Cycle-synced training

Menstrual phase:
You shouldn't avoid exercise during your period. On the contrary, it can help relieve cramps and combat discomfort. Nevertheless, it should be quieter activities like slightly brisk walks, Pilates, or yoga.

Follicular and ovulatory phases:
Due to increased estrogen, the body is said to have plenty of energy available during these two phases. Therefore, this period is excellent for physically demanding training sessions, for example, running, rowing, or boxing.

Luteal phase:
In this phase, physical activities should once again be limited to lighter training sessions like yoga or Pilates so as not to drain too much energy from the body.

Is cycle syncing suitable for everyone?

In principle, there is nothing wrong with taking a closer look at your cycle. However, whether the method is really effective for you depends heavily on your individual type. Every woman's menstrual cycle is different. It not only varies in length, but every woman also perceives the individual phases differently. While one person may struggle significantly with hormonal fluctuations or pain, another may not notice much of their monthly cycle at all, apart from their period.

If you belong to the latter group, you are in the fortunate position that your hormones do not significantly impact your daily life. If you only experience problems during your period, then good menstrual products will help increase your well-being.

There is no scientific proof that the cycle-syncing method has a truly significant influence on the body. However, it is definitely proven that hormonal fluctuations do affect the body. So, if the method makes your everyday life easier and supports you, you are definitely not doing anything wrong. Ultimately, it is about listening to your body, and if you find that cycle syncing is not for you, that is perfectly fine as well.
